The history of media and communication studies goes back much further than the foundation of the University of Bremen in 1971. The Institute for German Press Research which is well-known for its historic media projects has already been in existence since 1957 as a department of the Bremen State Library. It later became a university research institute. In addition, the research field of Communication Studies has existed since the constitution of the University of Bremen. In order to profile the media-related research activities, the IMKI, Institute for Media, Communication and Information was established in 2005 in cooperation with the Information Management of the Faculty 3 Mathematics/Computer Science. In March 2011 the IMKI was renamed as Centre for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI). In winter term 2005/06 the MA Media Culture, a program accredited for media and communication studies, was launched. For the assurance of this program, but also to further concentrate the media and communication studies at the University of Bremen, the IPKM was established by the Faculty of Cultural Studies in 2009.
